CLASS A SURFACING

"Class A surfacing refers to the process of creating 3D CAD model that represents the geometry visible on the final product which will be used in further development e.g. tooling design. Often described simply as 3D modeling with high quality standard, however in reality should be described as an ability to adapt design geometry to production standards while minimizing design intent loss during multiple engineering revisions. A skill to modify the geometry within a small margin in order to fulfill engineering requirements while preserving its form, character, quality and general visual appeal and feel. These days an integral part of automotive and product design."

CAS MODELLING

"CAS modeling refers to the process of creating 3D model that tries to capture and describe visual design intent from 2D media as sketches and renders. Main goal of this stage is to establish a complete 3D data set with basic engineering assumptions fulfilled that accurately show desired design style or language for the final product. In CAS modeling it could be described as set of features of the model: what design language does it represent, how the main lines flow together, how balanced and well proportioned the volumes are, is the design intent clear enough to the customer? Afterwards the data is used as reference or, if done right, act as a starting point for further surface development in Class A surfacing - speeding up the development process and saving money on unnecessary design or engineering revisions."
